Between the 15th and the 20th of May 2000, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering organized the Seventh Annual Students’ International Computers Contest
HARD & SOFT Suceava 2000
The aim of the contest was to design and construct a vehicle that could automatically follow a path defined by four different infra-red sources. The vehicle consisted of a pair of geared dc motors which provided propulsion and steering, a directional infra-red sensor to monitor the I-R source, a Analog Devices DSP card to process and analyze the I-R signals and a motor card to provide adequate power for the motors.
The President of the Jury Committee was Prof. John MILNER (from City University, London), who was assisted by:
- Prof. Oleg BREKHOV from Moscow Aviation Institute
- Prof. Jean Michel DUTHILLEUL from Université des Sciences et Technologies
de Lille
- Lecturer Darius MIKALAUSKAS from City University, London.
The ranking of the participating teams:
1st prize – “Politehnica” University of Bucharest
2nd prize – Technical University of Timisoara
3rd prize – “Stefan cel Mare” University of Suceava.
Next year, our faculty will organize the 8th Edition of the contest,
and welcome representatives from the technical universities in Yugoslavia,
Ukraine, Russia, Moldavia and Romania.

Abstract. This paper proposes the introduction of a Service
Platform for the creation, execution and management of multimedia services
in heterogeneous networks. Examining the business-roles, the actors in
the Service Platform are identified. Furthermore several common building
blocks for developing services for the Internet are described and a brief
overview of some modern technologies for an object-oriented, component-based,
distributed platform for multimedia services is given. It is shown that
the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is very useful to implement all functions
according to the multimedia part of the Platform. A certain number of use
cases demonstrate the usefulness and the ability of this protocol to introduce
a session concept. By this, we want to cover many important requirements,
which could appear in service platforms with multimedia-oriented goals.
Finally an outlook of open research topics regarding this concept is given
as well as a short overview of related work.
Key words: Service Platforms, SIP, Multimedia Services,
Heterogeneous Networks, Convergence

Abstract. This paper is devoted to the development of the
methods for increasing the accuracy of measuring converter of complex two-poles
in the closed electric circuits. The increase of accuracy is reached at
the expense of correction both amplitude and phase components of converting
errors.
Keywords: in-circuit diagnostics, methods of the diagnostics,
measuring converter, transducer, increase of the transducer accuracy, passive
two-poles.

Abstract. Factors like new demands of knowledge and skills,
economic pressure and greater diversity of further education students,
require new forms of learning and teaching and an adequate management of
projects to introduce such forms. This paper presents an ongoing European
cooperation about the management of Web-based learning projects, including
the development of learning environments for further education. It is based
on experience the project partners gained in this direction within national
and European projects.

Abstract: The microwave drying has been experimentally investigated
on a laboratory scale. The experiments were performed at different levels
of microwave heating power. The kinetic of drying process was studied using
an exponential model Results obtained show a high level of correlation
between applied microwave power and drying rate.

Abstract. Consensus reaching is a fundamental issue in the
field of distributed systems; having a consensus reaching strategy helps
solving problems like leader election or the committing of distributed
transactions, which turn out to be of great use in building of reliable,
fail-safe distributed systems. We examine two cases where specific types
of failures are allowed within the network: link failures and process failures.
Keywords: distributed consensus, fault tolerance, fail-safe
distributed systems, synchronous networks

Abstract: The principle of vector control of electrical drives
is based on the control of both the magnitude and the phase of each phase
current and voltage. For as long as this type of control considers the
three-phase system as three independent systems the control will remain
analog and thus present several drawbacks. The most common of these accurate
vector controls is presented in this document: the Field Orientated Control,
a digital implementation which demonstrates the capability of performing
direct torque control, of handling system limitations and of achieving
higher power conversion efficiency.
Keywords: Field Oriented Control (FOC), Pulse With Modulation
(PWM), Space Vector Pulse With Modulation (SVPWM).

Abstract: This paper presents a method for utilizing the on-chip
PWM generators on a TMS320Cx DSP for digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion.
The method involves analog low-pass filtering the PWM signal to remove
high frequency components, leaving only the low-frequency content. Theoretical
and experimental results are presented to quantify the achievable bit resolution.
In addition, analog low-pass filter design is discussed and an example
3 rd order filter design is given. The achievable D/A bandwidth is on the
order of 500 to 1000 Hz. Such bandwidth is useful for real-time system
debug purposes, and also suitable in less demanding applications such as
low performance servo control or man-machine interfacing.
Keywords: PWM, DSP, low-pass filtering.

Abstract. This document describes the use of the Common
Open Policy Service (COPS) protocol for support of policy provisioning
(COPS-PR ) in technical security systems. This specification is independent
of the type of policy being provisioned (Security, etc.) but focuses on
the mechanisms and conventions used to communicate provisioned information
between Policy Decision Points and Policy Enforcement Point. The protocol
extensions described in this document do not make any assumptions about
the policy data model being communicated, but describe the message formats
and objects that carry the modeled policy data.
Keywords: Protocol, Common Open Policy Service, Policy Information
Base, Request, Decision, Report State.
