CONFERENCE ON “DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION SYSTEMS”,
SUCEAVA, 21 – 23 MAY 1998
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering organized the Fourth International
Conference on “Development and Application Systems” attended by distinguished
scholars from Romania, Germany, the United States of America, France, Russia,
Italy, Belgium, Iran, Portugal and Moldavia. The papers presented covered
the following areas:
The number of articles published in 1998 has increased by 10% as
compared to 1996. To put it differently, 52 articles were written by Romanian
scholars and 33 articles by foreign collaborators. Two articles were written
in co-authorship.
The papers were published in the two volumes of our biennial publication
entitled “Development and Application Systems” (ISSN 1222-7234).

Abstract. The classical methods used to realistically render
3D scenes are “ray tracing” and “radiosity”. These methods are known for
the huge amount of processor time they require in order to obtain high
resolution, true colour images. The paper describes three application architectures
suitable to be used to accelerate the image synthesis process. This study
will be used to build an adequate application architecture for a distributed
realistic image synthesis system that will be developed at the Computer
Science Department of POLITEHNICA University Bucharest.
Keywords: image synthesis, global illumination algorithms,
ray tracing, radiosity, parallel algorithms, distributed computing.

Abstract. Changing market demands, globalisation of markets,
and the introduction of new technologies, especially ICT lead to new ways
of working. One example is collaboration between organisations for the
duration of a project to be able to flexibly react to customer and market
demands. Such collaborations are currently called Virtual Enterprises.
In practice, such collaboration projects often run out of time and
budget. A frequently mentioned cause for this phenomenon is that collaboration
and communication is far from optimal. Management tools to improve collaboration
and communication are, however, still lacking often leading to ad-hoc or
even wrong decisions.
In this paper, we present an approach to developing tools
to support management of Virtual Enterprises to organise, manage, and improve
the work needed to achieve the goals set. We especially focus on a model
to support the analysis of Virtual Organisations. The model is part of
the deliverables of the Esprit project FREE (Fast Reactive Extended Enterprise).
The model focuses on the creation of conditions for collaboration and communication.
The FREE project has the goal to develop management tools
which guidelines to improve the way of working in a Virtual Enterprise.
An additional goal is to extensive knowledge on (human) resource requirements
in a fast reactive n cultural/lingual environment, communication and collaboration
requirements, and organisational arrangements in such an environment.
Keywords: virtual enterprise, management, marketing, VIVE, FREE, SME
